When Lina disappears, love fuels James's drive to discover the truth, by using the clues hidden in the notes he finds underneath his door. Mortality becomes his greatest enemy. A paranormal romance with suspense and horror elements. Includes flashbacks to 1918.
I loved reading this story!
I love how it plays in the 80s, 1985, to be precise. It's an accurate depiction of the era, and I still love the 80s!
It's a classic love story between two people, James and Lina, who were damaged by their past. With their careful, loving approach, they help each other overcome their demons. The writer switches the point of view between these two, so we can get inside their heads and get to know them better. We get to like them because of that, even though they are not always necessarily kind to each other and others. But they have reasons for that; they were hurt in the past and take their first steps towards healing each other as they find it hard to be intimate with someone else.
I loved the surprise ending, and I loved that, just like James, I didn't see it coming. The writer made clever use of story-telling devices only uniquely available to a novel writer: leaving a lot to the imagination of the reader, facilitating a surprise ending.
This sublime ghost story contained just the right amount of creep factor and tenderness. I’m in awe of the author’s use of description and style to tell a story woven with believable mystery and romance. I’m excited to suggest this book to others and to check out more of her writing.
FIVE STAR REVIEW: A well written and hauntingly bittersweet tale.
